Heavy Duty Tent pegs FAQ
(and why Red Roads has the best hard ground tent pegs!)

Where to use strong tent pegs?

Using a strong tent peg makes sense - heavy duty enough to meet the demands of your environment - right?

The is nothing worse than bent tent pegs, caused by hammering into hard ground. With good materials, design and technique, bent tent pegs are pretty much a thing of the past.

Are heavy duty tent pegs strong enough to go in to rock?

Heavy Duty tent pegs made of steel are the best chance for hammering into rock. But not all rocks are the same. Sedimentary Rocks, formed by hardening of particles, can be tamed by our heavy duty tent pegs. Igneous and Metamorphic Rocks, such as Basalt, will be much more difficult, if not impossible. Think about concrete or bitumen, composed of smaller particles of stones and sand...this is OK with the right technique. Be sure to check out our blog on correct hammering techniques!

What are the best tent pegs for wind?

Wind is a factor that must change your approach in how you set up a tent or awning. Light winds have little to no impact on a tent, but once the winds become strong, you need to secure your camp or awnings with tent pegs that can withstand higher pressure. The best way to do this is a combination of multiple peg points, or in other words, having two guy cords off one tent point. Double (or triple) the power - think of it like a tug of war...3 people against 1 is going to win! Also, look for longer tent pegs with larger diameters, the further you go down, the more that the wind has to blow to dislodge the peg.

What are the best tent pegs for sand?

Sand and soft ground requires a different approach completely to tent pegs than the heavy duty pegs required for hard ground. Check out our article on soft ground pegs / sand pegs (hint: it's about surface area!)

Best tent pegs for rocky ground?

Heavy Duty Steel Pegs are suitable for rocky ground where the material is, as known in geology terms, sedimentary. For hard rock such as granite and basalt, a different tactic needs to be taken. If the rocks are only stones, hidden under the surface, this is probably OK as your peg and hammer will work in unison to push the rocks aside.

Proper angle to stake a tent peg?

The ideal way of staking a tent peg is 90 degrees or slightly more to the angle of the pulling force. So, for example, if you had a force pulling along the surface of the ground with no lift, you could insert the peg directly downwards into the ground. Now as that tension rises above the ground, you would angle the peg so that it always remained at a right angle, or perpendicular to the pulling force, probably that would be a guy rope. It is ideal to move away from the object that you are trying to secure in order to allow yourself to insert the peg at approximately a 45 degree angle, which is not always possible, but this is the optimum way to stake out a tent peg.

What is a tent peg puller?

Most of us know the saying about gravity "What goes up, must come down", well with tent pegs, the exact same is true "what goes in, must come out". When you have staked out a tent peg into hard ground, the addition of "if it's hard to get in, it's hard to get out" is true, so any good tent peg has a point where you can insert a "puller" or "extractor" which enables you to leverage or pull the peg outwards. This makes removing pegs from the ground much easier. Tent Peg Pullers come in all shapes, sizes to suit all budgets. A hammer/ puller combination makes life easiest.
